A Lie in Jesus' Name
Twice this week, folks forwarded me emails containing "urgent information." One sender warned me about a new movie that ridicules Christ. The other implored me to ignore notes carjackers are placing on cars in the dark of night. A quick Google search exposed both as "urban legends."
To most of us, these half-truths are annoyances, but for Michael "Mikey" Weinstein, they’re much worse.
Weinstein is the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) and his organization represents military members seeking freedom of religion and sometimes, even freedom from religion. Truthfully, the MRFF is a bit left for my taste, but you have to respect their six nominations for the Nobel
Peace Prize. [...]

DoD IG takes a second look at complaint against the Air Force's
2-star chief of chaplains
Thursday, November 10, 2016
The Air Force Inspector General's Office has found that Maj. Gen. (Chaplain) Dondi Costin, the service's chief of chaplains, did not act improperly when he appeared in uniform at a July event sponsored by the Chaplain Alliance for Military Liberty.
But the matter may not end there as the Defense Department's IG takes a second look.
The two-star delivered the benediction July 12 at an event in which outgoing Rep. Randy Forbes, R-Va., was presented with the alliance's Torchbearer Award.
That caught the attention of Mikey Weinstein, president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, who demanded an investigation into the chaplain's actions by the Defense Department Office of the Inspector General. [...]

Gay-Bashing Chaplain Endorsers Admit that the Military Chaplaincy is Disproportionately Anti-LGBT
In a 2011 article titled "Military chaplains are faith mismatch for personnel they serve," the St. Louis Post Dispatch noted: "While just 3 percent of the military's enlisted personnel and officers call themselves Southern Baptist, Pentecostal or a member of a denomination that's part of the National Association of Evangelicals, 33 percent of chaplains in the military are members of one of those groups." The article further predicted that this "disparity could soon widen." And widen it has.
Several months ago, I wrote about an event hosted by the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty (CARL), a coalition of fundamentalist Christian military chaplain endorsers. (Chaplain endorsers, formally called "Ecclesiastical Endorsing Agents," are the individuals who represent their religion or religious denomination to certify to the military that a chaplain of their religion or denomination meets the educational and other qualifications required to be a military chaplain. Without an endorsement from a government-approved chaplain endorser, a chaplain cannot serve in the military.) My reason for writing about that particular CARL event was to explain why the Air Force's chief of chaplains, Maj. Gen. Dondi Costin, was in violation of military regulations not only for attending this private organization's event in uniform, but actually participating in it and literally blessing the virulently anti-LGBT message of CARL and its member endorsers by delivering the event's closing benediction. "Resolve & Reflect Moral Behavior For the New Year"
Saturday, January 7, 2017
Human morality is composed of benevolent behavior actually lived – not having bewildering beliefs based on religious hearsay. Moral living requires hard work with effort, whereas accepting archaic religious claims requires only convenient conformance without effort. World philosophers beginning with Socrates have long maintained that morality is autonomous. In their words, we must do our moral thinking and living for ourselves.
World history confirms the three Abrahamic revealed religions preferred behavior over beliefs. Old Testament Judaism emphasized righteous behavior not right beliefs. Jesus of New Testament Christianity taught compassionate behavior not correct beliefs. Muhammad in the Islamic Quran commanded faithful behavior not false beliefs. [...]
